Low Blood Pressure Treatment

Do you have Low Blood Pressure?

Do you know that low blood pressure can cause vomiting, seizures and loss of consciousness?

Do you know that low blood pressure can cause hair loss, loss of vision, diarrhoea, dizziness and breathing difficulties?

According to the latest medical research, low blood pressure can cause serious short and long term side effects. If not treated promptly, low blood pressure can lead to unconsciousness, coma or even worse. Hence, it is a priority that low blood pressure is treated as soon as possible.

What is Low Blood Pressure?

Low blood pressure or otherwise known as hypotension is when the force of blood pumping around the body is very low. This leads to general circulation, neurological and many body system dysfunctions.

What causes Low Blood Pressure?

There are many causes of low blood pressure, but is caused by 3 main ways.

  1. Reduced blood volume or loss – affected by drugs, hormonal changes in the body, anaemia, blood loss, dehydration, haemorrhage, starvation
  2. Vasodilation of the blood vessels or widening of the blood vessels – caused by sympathetic nervous injury or dysfunction (due to neurological injury or dysautonomia), medication (eg. nitrates, calcium channel blockers), anaesthetics, hormone changes
  3. Decreased cardiac output – caused by congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction (heart attack), bradycardia (decreasing heart rate), arrhythmias

What kind of Low Blood Pressure Treatment are there?

There are many types of low blood pressure treatment. Low blood pressure treatment is dependent on what caused the low blood pressure.

Usually people who have low blood pressure, the most immediate treatment is:

Trendelenburg Position

The Trendelenburg position is when you get the person lying on their backs with their legs right up so you increase the venous blood flow back to the heart. This will immediately help resolve blood pressure in the short term.

Rehydration

Normally, blood pressure can be quickly resolved by increasing the body fluid by drinking water with electrolytes or by intravenously through intravenous therapy.

Increasing the blood fluid will automatically increase the blood pressure as you increase the blood volume.

Blood Pressure Support

In immediate cases where blood pressure is low, the low blood pressure treatment usually is to inject norepinephrine or a stress hormone. This stress hormone increases blood pressure increases vascular tone or vasoconstriction which decreases the blood vessel size and hence increases the blood pressure. It is usually given intravenously and people who are in shock.

Exercise

Exercise has been clinically proven to treat hypotension in the short and long term. Exercise helps to increase vascular tone and cardiac output. Exercise also helps to prevent low blood pressure getting worse.

Blood Pressure Stockings

Blood pressure stockings like TED stockings help to increase general low blood pressure and prevent deep vein thrombosis. This is done by compression of the blood vessels which help increase general blood pressure.
